A BREAK OUT year for the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour has the Event poised to become one of the world’s premier endurance events.

Event Organisers confirmed today the 2014 Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour would return on the February 7-9 weekend next year, the race now firmly established as the ‘season opener’ for Australian motorsport.

“The Event continues its steady growth pattern, however with some significant advances this year,” Event Director James O’Brien said.

“The significantly larger field, increased attendance and substantial online growth are three key areas we are particularly pleased with.

“From our perspective, the first year of the relationship with Liqui-Moly, and the team from MotorActive, has been highly productive. Our philosophy of steady growth has not changed, however it has become apparent to all stakeholders of the potential this Event holds.

“Work on the 2014 Event commenced on race day, with more initiatives and improvements to be announced in the near future.”

In pre-dominantly fine weather, 22,453 people attended across the three days, more than 2,700 from 2012.

Since the introduction of GT vehicles into the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour race, the overall Event attendance has grown by nearly 5,000 people across the three days.

A record number of advance sales tickets were reported by Ticketek, whilst a record number of campers enjoyed three or more days on the Mountain itself with the paddock campground abuzz every night of the racing weekend.

125 members of the media were accredited, including eight from overseas and more than 30 from interstate.

Once again the Event was broadcast live on the internet, with record numbers logging on to watch the race.

For the first time, the renowned crew joined the event and their involvement opened up a brand new market internationally for the Race, thousands tuning in online to see and hear the drama unfold.

Peaking at 9,800 simultaneous viewers near the race’s conclusion on Sunday evening, more than 114,000 views were recorded on the live stream via the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour website across the race itself.

A further 35,000 views were recorded the previous day when qualifying and all support races were shown live. The figures are expected to grow when traffic from partner websites is taken into account.

More than 8,000 comments were received on the live website and many thousands more via social media.

Across the five days (Wednesday – Sunday) of the Event, the official Facebook site reached more than 160,000 people and added more than 1500 ‘likes’ across the race weekend.

Between more than 7500 fans on Facebook and 2800 twitter followers, the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour continues to build an impressive online presence.

This year 49 cars started the race and the biggest ever online audience watched the race live on the internet as Erebus Motorsport swept to a stunning victory with their Mercedes Benz SLS AMG driven by Bernd Schneider, Thomas Jaeger and Alex Rollof.

A record 19 different brands started the race at 7am on Sunday with 34 of the 49 12-hour competitors classified as finishers at the end – a record for the race since its return in 2007.

A record 15 safety car interruptions (for a record total of 43 laps) were experienced – though the winning vehicle still completed 268 laps or 1,665km of Mount Panorama – the third longest distance record across eleven, 12-hour races held on the Mountain.

A competitive battle between Mercedes, Ferrari and Audi saw five different cars take turns in front, with 17 lead changes recorded throughout the race. The race-winning Mercedes led 130 laps in total, including a strong 69-lap stint in the lead from lap 199 through to the race finish.

For the outright finishers, it was very much a case of going ‘one step further’ than the year prior.

Erebus Motorsport won the race having finished second last year, whilst Ferrari outfit Clearwater Racing also went one better – their second beating the third-place achieved 12 months ago.

Porsche finished third this season, having just missed out on the podium (with a Class B car) last year.

In the Production Car class the GWS Motorsport BMW 335i Turbo recorded its third Bathurst victory on Sunday in a memorable performance by what is very much a local team.

Having won twice outright (in 2007 and 2010), the venerable BMW Coupe’ took out Class D (V8 Race Production – High Performance) after its main rivals faltered
